I will thank the Lord with all my heart as I meet with his godly people. How amazing are the deeds of the Lord! All who delight in him should ponder them. Psalm 111:1-2 NLT

What is a real gift?

We're having weekly giveaways during December.
Read more about it below!

It’s that wonderful time of year! Christmas is coming and excitement rings in the air as we search for exactly the right gift for our loved ones…and not so loved ones.

As I pondered this post, the question of exactly what a gift is arose, so I consulted Webster’s for the definition.

Gift: present, endowment, natural talent, empower, bestow, bequeath, invest.

Invest. Hmmm. Hadn’t really thought about a gift being an investment, but it got me to thinking about the difference between a casual gift to someone and a real gift. When we give someone a real gift, a part of us is attached—we’ve invested something of ourselves in the present. That involves risk and can be a little scary.

Have you ever spent time picking out just the right gift? Agonizing over the color or style, maybe even spending too much? Only later to discover that gift in the recipient’s yard sale. Hurts, doesn’t it?

I wonder how God, the Supreme Giver, feels. Do we get it when we see a baby laugh, or a beautiful sunset, or a flaming red maple tree, or snow falling softly and blanketing the countryside? These are all gifts from the Creator of the universe who loves to bestow gifts upon us. Not only does He want us to enjoy what He gives us, but He also wants to offer Himself to us. And He did just that in the form of His Son.

So, as the Christmas season approaches, let’s remember God’s gift of His Son and share Him with others.

  1. I'm going to try and be more aware of the gifts God gives me today.
    Thanks for the reminder, Pat!

  2. Pat - thank you so much for your post. I think when we think of gifts we often think packages, ribbons, and bows. But, you are right - Gifts from God come in a variety of ways!

  3. Pat, thank you so much for the reminder of the gifts God gives me each day! Great post!

  4. I work with small children on a daily basis and see God's gifts in abundance. Sometimes my patience...or lack of gets in the way of me truly appreciating those gifts. Thanks so much for the reminder, Pat.

  5. Yes, the best gift of all, and you expressed beautifully. Thanks and every blessing to you!

  6. Pat, I know I say this a lot but it is so true. What a beautiful reminder. What greater gift could God have ever given us and He did it before we even liked Him, let alone loved Him.

"And While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us..."

  7. Pat, what a wonderful reminder about gifts! God's gifts are amazing, and seem so "simple" in the hurry and scurry of our lives. I so appreciate the exhortation to look for God's gifts, that He has chosen just for me. :) I am going think on and thank our Abba for the incredible gift of His Son. Thanks again!

  8. Lovely post, Pat, and certainly a timely reminder. Thanks!!
